ON THE ROAD AGAIN (Kunming)

MOVING OUR bags to the University hotel from Kathryn's place we walked past endless Ma-jong rooms, home water bottle courier centres, internet cafes and 'milkbars' selling waterbottles, iced tea and phonecards.

I knew I was in China when I saw the old men sitting on the side of the road drinking tea from jam jars, the tea leaves still floating in them. Kathryn tells me that the translation for this drink is 'pond scum'.

We passed a cart selling bunches of freshly picked roses. A dozen fresh white roses sold for 2 quai (about AU35c). We were dumbfounded.

(The internet cafes have washed mousepads hanging outside to dry)
