THE GROTTIER THE BETTER (Lunch in KM)

CHINESE CULTURE, as it increases in wealth angles strongly towards the Western experience. Thus - to get an authentic idea - you have to go downmarket.

"Kathryn, " I said, "I'd like some real Kunming food, the grottier the better, to get a real taste - know what I mean?"
"I know just the place!"

--
We ate at this little restaurant (right in picture) right on the Kunming train line. A Diesel chugged by towing five varied rusty looking freight carriages.

The rice was a little slow in coming and so Kathryn gave them a little reminder. The waitress dashed outside to a van that pulled up and ran back in with the plastic buckets filled with rice. Why cook it when you can just buy it and reheat it?
