YUNNAN COFFEE (Zhong Dian)

THE PROPRIETORS of the Hazel cafe obviously had other priorities than serving me coffee and so went went back across the lane to our guest house, the Harmony Inn and ordered the local blend, a Yunnan coffee.

Our host poured the beans into an ornate metal hand-grinder - the sound of the grinder working filled me with wonder. My electric grinder at home generates a melody equivalent to an F16 taking off in a sandstorm. This manual grinder sound was the Victorian whiz of gears and a slight rattling of marbles.

The coffee was served in a conventional french style expresso cup and saucer. The taste...so fresh, so rich. As good as or better than a newly opened bag of Lavazza from home.
